Canada's women's lightweight double for the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia, which begins Aug. 28, will now be Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee, both of Victoria, B.C.
Tracy Cameron, who rowed with Jennerich to win the 2010 World Championships in this boat class, is still rehabilitating from a rib stress fracture and will now row in the single (a non-Olympic event).
"Given that I'm not yet 100 percent, it's too much of a risk," said Cameron, also an Olympic bronze medalist. "We are approaching this in a businesslike manner, and the goal has always been to qualify the double for the Olympics. I trust and believe that Lindsay and Patricia can get this job done."
Rowing Canada Aviron High Performance Director Peter Cookson confirmed the new lineup today and that Cameron is healthy enough to train and compete in the single.
"Tracy has not completely healed to the level required for the double, but she has been progressing nicely and is medically cleared to row in the single," Cookson said today. "I'm confident that we have a great replacement in Patricia Obee, and this boat can get in a position to qualify."
In lightweight women's double event, Canada would have to achieve a spot in the top eight boats in order to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. The boat, not the athletes, then has a spot for the Games. This is the only boat class for lightweight women in the Olympic program.
At the Worlds, Canada has a total of 10 of the possible 14 Olympic class entries (W8+, M8+, M4-, LM4-, W2x, LW2x, W2-, LM2x, M2-, M2x) and three non-Olympic class entries (M2+, LM2- and LW1x) and one adaptive (Paralympic) crew (LTA4+).
